It was such an eye-opener that when I heard about the new intake for the diploma, I knew I had to sign up to enhance my learning further.
In today’s corporate world, leadership is more than just managing people—it’s also about guiding and empowering them. For Janice Tan, a leadership class she attended in 2023 at The School of Positive Psychology (TSPP) sparked a new curiosity. That first glimpse into coaching opened the door to a deeper passion, leading her to pursue a Graduate Diploma in Coaching Psychology in 2024 to better understand the art and science behind coaching psychology.
The Foundations of Coaching Psychology
In the programme, she delved into essential competencies that make a good coach. These include skills like active listening, asking the right questions to evoke thought in others, and being fully present during conversations. Janice learned, through the programme, to truly listen—rather than simply preparing her response, equipping her with practical skills to better helm coaching conversations.
Applying New Skills in Workplace
These skills have transformed how I interact with colleagues.
One of the most significant changes Janice experienced was in her corporate interactions. “I’ve become a better listener, and learned to ask more insightful questions,” she reflects, especially on how this growth has helped her bring win-win outcomes for her colleagues in the corporate environment.
At work, her newly learned skills helped her in having coaching conversations, empowering others to make decisions that serve them best, rather than only relying on mentorship or advice-giving. Janice highlights the power of coaching, as opposed to more traditional mentoring approaches, “Instead of simply telling someone what to do, coaching encourages them to discover solutions that resonate with their own goals.”
A Community of Growth
What stood out to Janice about her experience at TSPP was the sense of community. Janice has a great appreciation for her classmates and teachers who bring diverse perspectives shaped by their own life experiences. “Each person shares their unique life experiences, and this sharing creates a rich learning environment. Everyone here is invested in their growth and is eager to help others achieve their goals.”
Yet another glimmer that Janice was not expecting as she embarked on the course was that she found a safe space in her newfound community at TSPP. “It’s a space where vulnerability is embraced, allowing us to connect on a deeper level. Through this openness, we learn a lot from each other.”
Janice further shares that during the classes, her classmates and teachers practise leaving judgment at the door and ensure that everything shared remains confidential. “This creates a strong sense of psychological safety in the classroom—something I deeply appreciate.”
A Call to Action for Aspiring Coaches
Coaching psychology is a transformative journey, both personally and professionally. The skills that Jance gained have not only strengthened her communication but also deepened her understanding of human behaviour.
Janice appreciated the supportive environment at TSPP which helped her in developing her coaching skills. “If you’re looking to enhance your abilities in these areas, this is a fantastic place to start your journey.”
If you’re passionate about unlocking human potential and empowering others to thrive, taking our Graduate Diploma in Coaching Psychology could be your next transformative step. Who knows?
